Most frequent questions and answers

For several years I have not been satisfied with the long term health of my patients. People just kept getting sicker and sicker without getting well. I felt there had to be a better way of treating them. I wanted them to have a better quality of life. After a lot of prayer, I believe God sent Dr. Ben Edwards into my life. I spent several months training with him and learning integrative or functional medicine. I can now seek for the root cause of a medical problem and cure it instead of just treating symptoms with band aids.

No we do not. There are several reasons for that. When we were required to implement EMRs (Electronical Medical Records), we were told it would save us time. As most physicians have realized, they are much more burdensome. With all of the new insurance regulations, we have to spend more time filling out forms than we ever did before. Also, as the regulations have increased, the amount of money the insurance companies pay out has decreased. It has become a numbers game to keep our practice open. In accepting cash only (credit cards, checks, cash, etc.) I can now make my own standards as far as how much time I can spend with the patient. Also, as long as I take insurance, they can have some say in how our practice is run – what questions we have to ask, how long we can take, what we can charge, etc. Now, we no longer have that burden.

Integrative or functional medicine is a new and rapidly growing area of medicine that seeks to approach sickness and disease from a different viewpoint than a traditional “one symptom, one drug” paradigm. I call this new model the “do what’s best for the patient” model. In integrative medicine, the physician expands beyond the narrow drug/surgery approach taught in western medical schools, utilizing various treatment modalities that have been proven effective. Its goal is to address the root cause of sicknesses and diseases, rather than manage symptoms.

To gain a better understanding about this type of medicine, read this article from a colleague, Frank Shallenberger:

Why We Can Cure Problems That Conventional Medicine Can’t.

I tell my patients that I never want them to take ANYTHING a doctor recommends without knowing the reason behind it. That’s why I try to educate you in new dietary habits. The truth is, the diet that most people are already on, the Standard American Diet (S.A.D.), is one of the deadliest diets mankind has ever known. It is causing more cancer, diabetes, strokes, heart attacks (and just about every other degenerative disease) than any other diet known to man. We will teach you the WHY behind the need for dietary changes and then it will be your choice whether to continue eating dead, disease-causing “food-like substances” or more real food that God made for the building and maintenance of the body. We will also teach you what health-building substances your body requires in order to function optimally and how to get these nutrients in as natural a form as possible, first through diet, and then through carefully selected supplements as needed. In an ideal world, supplementation would be unnecessary, but because of modern farming techniques, mineral depletion of the soil, contemporary cooking techniques, and other factors, virtually everyone needs some targeted nutritional supplementation.

Yes, we have several kinds of nutritional IV therapies. These can consist of nutritional supplementation after a chronic illness,  or treatment for several disease conditions such as asthma, macular degeneration, or chelation therapy for heavy metal burden. During your consultation with me, we both will come up with a game plan on which IV therapies are needed.
